The 2024 GR Sport II promises to be the best driving Hilux ever, but it only has 201 hp
After introduction, Toyota has announced pricing and equipment details for the Hilux GR Sport II. However, European customers are expecting twice the sport will be twice as disappointed.
While most GR variants are focused on performance, the truck doesn’t exactly follow in the footsteps of the GR Corolla or GR Yaris. Quite the opposite as it has a familiar 2.8-liter turbodiesel engine developing 201 hp (150 kW / 204 PS) and 369 lb-ft (500 Nm) of torque. It’s connected to a six-speed automatic transmission and a standard four-wheel drive system. That’s not a thrilling combination, but Toyota said the truck has a best-in-class towing capacity of 7,716 lbs (3,500 kg).

Despite paling in comparison to the EcoBoost-powered Ford Ranger Raptor, Toyota said the GR Sport II is the “best-driving Hilux yet … thanks to the wider track, a raised ride height, and improvements in handling characteristics, including a reduced roll angle and more precise steering response.” Speaking of which, the ride height has been increased by 0.8 inches (20 mm) while the tracks grow up to 5.9 inches (150 mm).
The upgrades don’t stop there as the truck sports larger front discs as well as rear discs instead of drums. The model also features a “revised” suspension with monotube dampers. On the styling front, the model wears an aggressive front fascia and a black mesh grille with “TOYOTA” logo. They’re joined by a sporty front bumper and a faux silver skid plate.
Other highlights include black fender flares, an aero sport bar, and an assortment of other black components ranging from the mirrors to the door handles. The Hilux also has 17-inch black alloy wheels that are wrapped in all-terrain tires.
The dark theme continues inside with black leather and suede sport seats that have silver contrast stitching. Buyers will also find GR logos, red seatbelts, and aluminum pedals. Rounding out the highlights are a nine-speaker JBL premium audio system and an 8-inch infotainment system, which supports wired Android Auto and wireless Apple CarPlay.
Pricing starts at USD 65,720 in Europe, as for the rest of the 2024 Hilux lineup, there isn’t much to report besides “some specification upgrades, including the addition of smart entry, eight-inch multimedia touchscreen and a reversing camera.”
